Choose the right type of lock for your gate

To make your choice easier, we have put together a short guide to our most common lock types:

  • Gate latch: The classic choice for wooden gates and fences. Provides a smooth and traditional closing that can often be operated with one hand.
  • Sliding bolt: A robust and quick way to secure the gate. Excellent for both single gates and as a stabilising reinforcement on a double gate.
  • Hasp and staple: The obvious choice when you want to secure your gate with a padlock, for example on a shed or a rear driveway.

Choosing the right material is crucial for the lock to last outdoors year after year. For a traditional look, many choose a black gate latch, while hot-dip galvanised steel is a robust and maintenance-free standard choice for, for example, a gate hook. In an extra weather-exposed environment, stainless steel details are the safest choice.

Fittings for both single and double gates

Which fittings are required depends on the design of the gate. A wider double gate needs to be anchored to the ground with ground pins to become fully stable, often combined with a heavy-duty bolt in the middle. If instead you want to secure a shed or a back door, a hasp for padlock or a neat rim lock is usually enough. We also have classic stable bolts for those renovating an older gate who want to retain the original style.
